In April 2024, my family and I took a seven day holiday to Malta! This trip combined a work business trip for myself and a family holiday.
Please find below an account of our family's travels!
When did we travel?
We travelled 3rd -10th of April and by golly, we we ready for some sunshine! Winter had felt so grey and miserable! This time we flew with Air Malta from London Heathrow. We wanted to get the children used to travelling from a larger airport and this also offered us the best flight times. The night before we flew we stayed at The Hilton at Heathrow which was really convenient and we could park the car there also.
Where did we stay?
We stayed at The Intercontinental, St George's Bay/ St Julian's Bay. The hotel itself was brilliant. Great room, great breakfast, helpful staff and there is even a living wall and a garden in the centre of the hotel! There was a great indoor pool the children loved and a rooftop pool. The rooftop pool was good but it was cold! Although it was unseasonably warm (mid - late 20's), the outdoor pool was still a bit fresh.
The vibe you get from St Julian's is mixed. It feels like an area that is really trying to raise its profile (and it is doing so successfully!). There are some beautiful, big hotels, like the Intercontinental, a new shopping mall and some nice restaurants.
There is still a slightly dodgy, "more clubby" street but we never encountered any problems and were never out past 10pm (usually we stayed out until 8pm max but one night I had a work dinner and came back at 10pm).
What was great about this area though was it had something for everyone. A beach, shops, restaurants, clubs, bowling alley, laser quest )if you fancied it!) so it felt somewhere you could also take teenagers and there would be plenty to entertain them.
What did we do whilst in Malta?
As mentioned above, the children loved swimming in the indoor pool and exploring the local area.
We also....
Walked to Sliema. There is a promenade that runs round from Spinola Bay all the way to Sliema which is suitable for pushchairs and wheel chairs also. Its quite a walk (1 - 2 hours depending on pace) but was a great way to see the area.
Visited Valetta (via a boat from Sliema). This time we took the local bus to Sliema (easy and cheap) and then boarded a boat across the bay. This was smooth, cheap and also quick. Valetta was beautiful. There wasn't loads to do for the children there but if my Husband and I visited again we would go to all the museums.
Visted St Pauls Bay. We took a taxi from the hotel to St Paul's Bay to go to the aquarium there. We all enjoyed the aquarium and it was fun to take the children. There is another long promenade in St Pauls way and lots of restaurants and bars. St Pauls felt a lot quieter than St Julian's.
Visited Mdina, the old capital. This was probably one of my most favourite days. You could feel the history ooze out of the old city walls and the restaurant there was great. You could spend afew hours walking around the city and there are museums to visit. We simply enjoyed being in the old city.
Where did we eat?
As previously mentioned, eating out with someone with allergies can be tricky. Thankfully, we managed to have successful dinners, as detailed below!
St Julian's:
Paranga: Owned by The Intercontinental. Lovely food. Quite pricey, but safe for allergies!
Wagamama: Ideally I like to go to local restaurants but this was a "safe" bet for my son and both of my children love Asian food, so win win!
Henry J Beans: Standard American food, but again good for the allergies
Fluid and Rib Steakhouse: Meat!
Valetta:
AKI . A brilliant Japanese restaurant
Mdina:
Coogi's Restaurant and Bar. Lovely restaurant tucked within the beautiful city with traditional Maltese and Italian food.
Would I recommend Malta as a family holiday destination?
YES!
This holiday for us was a much needed for the boost of Vitamin D! There are so many different areas of Malta and therefore different areas will appeal to different clients of all ages.
We were very lucky with the weather. For warmer weather, I would suggest visiting between May and September but Malta is a year round Island, with lots to explore.
Please let me know if I can be of any help planning your next escape!
I would be delighted to help.
